For obvious reasons, I decided to start my story from this category. All five contenders this year are strong. As always, there are no weak pictures on the Golden Globe. But I do not believe in the victory of Angelina Jolie and her picture “The first they killed my father.” Emotional, telling about the Cambodian genocide, which causes great respect for the author and his civic position, but it is very predictable and understandable from the first minute. It seems to me that the inclusion of this film in the number of nominees is enough recognition from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. High chances, in my opinion, of the German film “At the Limit” by Fatih Akin and “Unlike Love” by Andrei Zvyagintsev – these pictures are considered artistically more perfect than the work of Jolie.
Members of the jury of the Golden Globe are journalists, they regularly publish reviews, so that the possible results of their voting can be judged by their attitude to certain films. “At the Limit” is a powerful film from the Cannes competition of one of the best German filmmakers Fatih Akin, from the first in the life role of the Hollywood star Diana Kruger, played in her native German. The story of a woman who is losing a husband and a four-year-old child in a street act of terrorism. At “Unlike” many fans, but there is a strong flaw called “previous victory”. Hollywood press historically – I specifically watched the statistics of the “Globes” – does not like to give a prize to the same director, and “Leviathan” Zvyagintsev, I recall, won the statuette in 2015. Yes, there were exceptions – the last time the two-time winner was Michael Haneke, by the way, for the film “Love.”
I do not think that the Swedish picture “Square” on the “Globe”, in particular, and in America in general, are as strong as in Europe. This is a very European film, far from all in tune with the mood of people living in the States. Here it does not resonate with the life experience of Americans, as it does in the Old World, especially in the Nordic countries. “Square” – a very modern picture, permeated with a tolerant sense of guilt to those who come to Europe to build a new life, a film with an ironic look at themselves, which causes respect. But all this, in my opinion, is far from the American viewer. Therefore, I believe that the fight for the prize in this category will be “At the Limit”, “Dislike” and “Fantastic Woman”. The last is the Chilean film directed by Sebastian Lelio about the transgender – a very curious and relevant story,
The best actress in a dramatic film
In my opinion, this is Francis McDormand. I do not see any other options, and on “Oscar” she, I think, will also be among the favorites. McDormand played in Martin McDonagh’s movie “Three billboards on the border of Ebbing, Missouri” – this, by the way, is my favorite film of 2017. I’ve already watched it three times and I’m ready to watch more and more. I do not think that even the exceptional role of Sally Hawkins in the film Guillermo del Toro “Form of Water” is able to defeat the image created by McDormand. She plays a strong, middle-aged woman, who is hard-pressed to kill her daughter and tries alone to fight the police of her city, demanding an investigation, capture and punishment for the murderer. It is important that the output of this film coincides with a surge in public sentiment regarding the gender revolution, with a loud demand for cardinal changes in the role of women in American society. “Three billboards” – in no way a genre picture, not an action, for example, and even not accustomed to many thrillers. This is a real drama. But still, Francis is an uncompromising avenger, hard, consistent. The roles of such a plan in American cinema have always been given to men. McDormand, the wife of one of America’s best directors Joel Cohen, played her admirably. She already has a nomination for the “Globe” for her role in the series “What Olivia Knows”, now she again showed incredible acting talent. Best actor in a dramatic film
Here everything is not so predictable. It seems that a very young artist, twenty-one-year-old Timothy Shalame, who played the main role in the film “Call me by your name”, can win. This exceptional beauty of a young man plays a young man, a character younger than himself, who falls in love with a man of equally rare attractiveness (played by Armi Hammer). Nothing but the first feeling of a young man, except for the chemistry of views and omissions that arises between the main characters, there is no picture in the picture – it should always be in good cinema. This picture should not frighten people who avoid politically correct LGBT films – it does not have any explicit scenes or political statements. Only the magic of the cinema and the atmosphere of the Italian summer, so conducive to the awakening of the senses. In the Russian hire “Call me by your name,” of course, does not come out.
Shalama can be competed with my favorite actor, better than that, I’ll allow myself a daring statement, no one was born yet, – Daniel Day Lewis. The role in the film “The Phantom thread” – one of his most powerful. But he did not have the average, not that the weak. In addition, this role, Day Lewis called his last, which can bring him a reward and on the “Globe”, and exactly on the “Oscar”. The film was shot by the brightest director of independent author’s cinema of America Paul Thomas Anderson.
“Ghost thread” tells about the couturier of the British royal family of the middle of the twentieth century. Also a love story, but another – a fifty-year-old lonely fashion artist notices something special in a young German waitress. But the whole way of his life does not imply the appearance of a woman next door …
In this category, three brilliant professionals are clearly in the lead. First, the great Christopher Nolan with Dunkirk. Despite the budget of the blockbuster and the fact that Warner Brothers produced and released the film, the large-scale canvas about the Dunkirk operation during World War II is an uncompromisingly authorial work with temporary shifts in the narrative, a free manner of moving the viewer’s attention to different fragments taking place in the the picture of events, this is a radical artistic statement, almost devoid of narrative and that is unbelievable for a great Hollywood film, the main character. This film causes many of those viewers who are accustomed to the popular genre movies, questions or even bewilderment. At our spectators in occasion of “Дюнкерка” in general it is a lot of doubts is a history not usual for our cinema of a victory, not accomplishment, not overcoming, but rather the history of a desperate, chaotic, choking struggle for survival … This very survival is victory. In our decades-long system of coordinates, the main thing is to win, through “I do not want” and “I can not”, through unthinkable torments and tons of spilled sweat, for us, war and victory are located close to each other. “Dunkirk” is not our view of the world, of war, of feat. This is interesting.
Another contender for the prize for directing – Guillermo del Toro with the film “Form of water.” His passionary energy, his visionary spirit, his devotion to the cinema, his childish affection for what he loves all his life, and what from childhood he carries as a design, as a dream, is exhilarating. He remains an idealist and still in love with monsters. It is no coincidence that in his films, despite the presence of ghosts, vampires and the devil himself, the worst characters are people, and the main enemy is human prejudice. Here and in the “Form of Water” tserushniki and kagebeshniks of the early 60s of the last century hunt for a defenseless amphibian man, and defends his cleaning lady, silent Eliza, played by a wonderful British actress and clowness Sally Hawkins.
Naturally, the chances of victory and the director of “Three billboards on the border of Ebbing, Missouri” Martin McDonagh are high. However, it seems to me that Nolan and Del Toro will fight for the statuette. I would vote for the latter.
Best movie – comedy or musical
As is known, on the “Globe” there are two nominations: the best drama and the best comedy. At one time, the organizers of the award divided the films on this principle to allow more pictures to be seen and noted. Since then, the nomination “Comedy and Musical” includes a variety of genres. For example, “Off” is a classic horror, but it is represented in this nomination. Like “Lady Bird” – in my opinion, an absolute drama. The drama and what was called in the Russian box office “The Ice Bitch” – the film I Tonya, the story of figure skater Tony Harding.
In this nomination, it seems to me, the competition between the critically acclaimed picture “Away” and “Lady Bird” will unfold. “Off” surprised everyone, because a low-budget four-million film with a black hero collected in the world a phenomenal two hundred and fifty million. But it’s not even the box office, but that it’s a horror, surprisingly and witty beating racial problems in the world of rich white American suburbs, and this world is described coolly and accurately.
“Lady Berd” Greta Gerwig already at this stage has the status of “the best reviewed film” on the Rotten Tomatoes website, that is, the film with the highest ratings in the history of the site, which aggregates the ratings of the viewers and the press. I must admit, Lady Bird categorically did not like me. But apparently, it resonates very much with the life experience of Americans. This is the history of the school graduate, which is brilliant, it is necessary to give her due credit, played Searsha Ronan. The last class, a complicated relationship with my mother, a passionate desire to escape from her hated yet adorable Sacramento anywhere, but better, of course, to New York. There is no money for a private school – the heroine studies in the free Catholic, where girls are brought up with confessions and sermons. This is a film about a low middle class living somewhere on the outskirts of relatively prosperous areas. The girl wants rich, successful friends, is embarrassed by her family, argues with her mother, sympathizes with the unemployed father, tries to lose her virginity – in short, she wants to grow up and live her life. It happens, really, funny, these scenes and gave the occasion to include “Lady Bird” in the category of comedies.
Best movie – drama
In this nomination this year is hidden the biggest intrigue. Among the contenders will unfold a very serious competition. Firstly, the “Three billboards” are presented. Secondly, Spielberg’s Secret Dossier. This is the story of the Washington Post publisher Catherine Graham (played by Meryl Streep) and editor-in-chief of Ben Bradley, performed by Tom Hanks. They are in Hollywood, people are not the last, deservedly loved, plus the classic director – Steven Spielberg, plus the actual sounding policy – the film is based on a real story of the confrontation of The Washington Post to the White House. Everything is done, as always with Spielberg, very high quality, very talented and very academic.
Then the aforementioned “Call me by your name” is one of the most loved films of the year. It was shot by the Italian director Luca Guadagnino. After the obvious success of this film, Guadagnino is in demand unbelievably, he is offered to shoot all the studios.
And there is also the “Dunkirk” of Nolan, and the “Form of Water” del Toro. Well, how do I choose? Almost impossible. Any of these films can win, but it seems to me, the prize will take “Three billboards”. Martin McDonagh is an outstanding playwright, and he worked in the theater before he started making films. His debut as a director of full-length movies happened ten years ago – many people like the tape “To lie on the bottom in Bruges” in Russia. Then in his biography was another successful film – “The Seven Psychopaths”.
“Three billboards” cause an absolute admiration for the skill from a very ordinary situation, from “simple” and not of particular interest people to carve a spark of genuine tragedy. In this film, everything is very unexpectedly unfolding, the characters change radically in the course of the action, the attitude of viewers to them is also … A profound and subtle picture – genuine superficial passions are raging in outwardly ordinary characters. This is fascinating: it’s one thing when Shakespeare’s passions are raging in historical dramas about kings, and another is when in the chronicle of the life of ordinary Americans from Ebbing, Missouri.
